Apostille Certificate & Document Authentication for International Use

Apostille Document Services
Apostille Service | General Information

What is an Apostille Certificate?

An apostille is an official certificate that verifies the authenticity of legal documents for use in another country.

You will need an apostille if the country where you intend to use your document is on the 1961 Hague Convention member list. The Convention facilitates recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments.

How to Authenticate Your Notarized Documents

To authenticate a notarized document in Georgia, follow these steps:

The Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) is the only state agency authorized to issue apostilles for notarized and/or certified publicly recorded documents originating in the State of Georgia for use abroad.

Step 1: Notarization.

Ensure your document is properly notarized by a commissioned notary public.  The notary stamp or notary seal must include the notary's signature and date to verify the authenticity of the signer.

Step 2: County Clerk Certification (optional).

If you need extra verification, visit the county clerk’s office where the notary is commissioned. They can provide a certification verifying the notary’s commission and signature.

Step 3: Apostille (for international use).

  • If the document is intended for use abroad, you will need an apostille from the Georgia Secretary of State.
  • To obtain an apostille, submit the certified and/or notarized document to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office for authentication.
  • The apostille certifies that the notary's signature and seal are authentic and that the document is legitimate for use in foreign countries that are members of the Hague Convention.

Step4: Submit for Apostille.

Whether it's for an Apostille Birth Certificate in Georgia, business documents, or personal records, you can submit your documents either in person or by mail to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. Include the required fees and ensure all details meet the necessary criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hague apostille simplifies the process of recognizing public documents in countries that are parties to the Hague convention.

A Hague apostille is needed if:

  1. One wants to work in a different country.
  2. If you are getting married in another country.
  3. If you want a background check on someone.
  4. In case you want to establish a business in another country.
  5. If you’re going to adopt a child from another country.
  6. If one gives a power of attorney to someone in a different country.

These are the countries that are not part of the Hague Convention. As a non-Hague country, it is still possible to get your documents legalised, but it will require more processing stages depending on where the document is coming from and the individual in need of the documents. The document type will also be a determining factor in most countries.

You will need to provide a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, to be notarized.
